Laguna Beach High School Gym
Laguna Beach High School, in Laguna Beach CA selected Sound Image to provide audio design/build services when they wanted to upgrade their gymnasium sound system. The design services were provided by Michael Fay.
Over the years, SI has installed sound systems in many similar gyms. They are usually about the same size and almost always have difficult acoustics. We believe that the most cost-effective solution is the one installed at LBHS.
This design is based on a linear distribution of full range loudspeakers, which are mounted above and just in front of the first row of bleachers.
For this room, four Yamaha 15”, 2-way loudspeakers are installed on each side of the building. Each side was further divided into two zones, so that there are a total of 4 speaker zones to work with.
Using DSP presets allows the facility to be configured in several combinations of sound coverage. The zones for each side are configured as an inner pair and an outer pair. For the smallest activities needing sound reinforcement, all but the center two speakers on either side can be muted. This helps keep the sound focused in the area(s) needed, while not exciting the other parts of the building with unnecessary sound.
A Symetrix DSP provided input mixing and processing, and output routing and processing. An ARC-2 panel provided the user interface to recall presets.
A pair of Shure wireless mics were also installed with remote antennas. This arrangement provided wireless coverage in all areas of the gym. To prevent damage, the remote antennas are mounted behind protective cages. See photo.
SI also provided EASE room modeling, custom engineering and rigging for this facility.
